Firstly, if you attended the Michigan Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Spring Conference and saw me speak yesterday – love ya for it. Seriously, what an honor and privilege. I really appreciate the opportunity, the great questions, and the passion for nutrition other RDs have. Let’s take on the world, y’all.
Next, I thought I’d follow-up on the doctor who prayed for me this week. I did tell you guys I emailed her. I think. Well, I did. Catching the name on her employee badge was probably my smoothest move all week, and it was a smooth one. Here’s our email exchange:
Dr. Ursosweet,
I caught your name on your badge this morning at COPS after you prayed for me and my horrible week. It meant so much. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. It really means a lot.
Best,
Nicole
She wrote back saying,
Thank you for the email, I am glad I was able to offer the prayer for you. I hope it made a difference in the week. I believe God places us here to love each other, you needed lifting and I was blessed to be there. This message warmed my heart! Thank you!!
Erika
Yep. My week improved. How great.
To that same tune, we started going to church. My mom has voiced her opinion on several occasions that she would love if we found a church home. I was raised in the church…a church I’m not terribly fond of, but most of the people are wonderful. I’ve dabbled in church-going over the years. I can recall some church-going in college, and some when we lived in Tulsa, because if for no other reason the HUGE, MONGO churches all over the place look like something you really ought to check out when in Tulsa. They’re right up there with BBQ brisket and fried pickles.
But in all seriousness, when our friends Jen and Chad suggested we try out the church they started going to, my interest was piqued. Being liberal folks with reservations about organized religion just like myself, I knew I had to check it out. In fairness, the free Biggby coffee and awesome childcare would be reason enough to attend, but in all seriousness, the pastor is amazing. And funny. And authentic. And inspiring. And honest. And real. He’s very 2017 and I love it. There’s always clips from The Office or Ellen Degeneres…and the band, you guys! The lead vocalist could be the next Adele. She’s incredible.
We’re just a few weeks into this whole church-going thing, but we’re really enjoying it. We’re leaving each week with a nugget of feel-good application for our day-to-day lives and honestly, that’s what I want most from a church. Also really neat is the 5th Sunday of the month (on months with 5th Sundays…) there’s no service and everyone is encouraged to participate in an organized volunteer opportunity – mowing lawns for the less fortunate, helping at a food pantry, serving food to juveniles in detention. Love it.
It’s great for us and it’s great for the girls. Shea LOVES hanging out with “new friends” and Piper is eager to take on every new opportunity that heads her way. Everyone wins, especially since we can show up in jeans and our attire matches that of every other goer. Lurv it.
I’m a little more in-tune with my spiritual side these days and my doctor visit was perfectly timed
In unrelated news – my bestie is coming this weekend with her fiance and I’m sooooo excited!!!!!!!
Be well,
