I realised that the inspiration section of the blog was very women heavy so I thought today we should be inspired by a man and Andrew Cooper is perfect for that! The health world always seems so dominated by women, which I secretly love, but it’s good to have examples to inspire men to get healthy too. Andrew used to be the diet coke man, I’m sure you guys remember the adverts, but now he’s a juicing master, which is awesome! He owns one of my favourite juice companies, Juiceman, and knows a whole lot about healthy living…
Name: Andrew Cooper
Where do you live? Amersham, Buckinghamshire – when I’m not on a plane!
What sparked your interest in health and wellness? As a model/actor i have been taking between 50-200 flights a year and sometimes i would fly 12 hours for one day. This takes its toll on your immune system and health so i learnt to adapt my healthy habits to keep well and fit.
How did you build your passion for healthy living into a career? I was spending a lot of time in LA and New York and I witnessed how the juicing trend kept building and when cold pressed juicing took over I knew I wanted to start a juice company. At the time I had moved back to cheshire where I grew up and bought a 1750 fruit farm. In-between jobs I would grow all my fruit and veg and make cold pressed juices and cleanses for my friend and family which was how the Juiceman was born. What was also key for me was that I was finding a way to utilise all the waste to make bi-products. I then decided to embark on what has been a mammoth mission to create the most sustainable drinks business on the planet.
Who inspires you? My kids and evolution. I learn from my kids every day and although it sounds a bit worthy I like to focus on trying to educate and look to inspire for the next generation. Both of them inspire me to really want to create a business and product that keeps our kids and the future healthy and fit so they don’t get sick. For me there is an element to cancer which is a result of all the mistakes and shortcuts we have made in diet and lifestyle. Its funny my little boy Jackson – who is a massive inspiration to me, was bought up on green smoothies and my wife’s diet was immense through the pregnancy, he is a testament to this as he is such strong healthy kid and is never sick. He is also a giant of a four year old!
Favourite quote? It’s one of those phrases which has become so populist that it is often overlooked: ‘YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT’ good genes and good looks will only last so long if you fill your body with processed foods and sugar.
What is your biggest achievement so far? Apart from the obvious, marrying my wife and having our children, setting up the company and defying all those who said it wasn’t possible. Everyone wanted to cut the quality for price point and I’m proud to say we haven’t budged. There is no point having a Cold Pressed Juice Company that is Not ORGANIC. Flooding customers system’s with pesticides for extra profit is bullshit.
What’s your typical…
Breakfast: Chia Pot with cashew cream and berries or Guacamole on Sourdough with poached egg and chilli. If I’m honest I have three breakfasts a day if you include a green smoothie.
Lunch: Salad or Chicken Broth
Snack: Kale Chips, Sprouted Hummus and veggies or Maca and Banana Smoothie
Dinner: Grilled Salmon with a Kale Salad and Quinoa
What’s your favourite dessert? Vegan Matcha Cheesecake from Hu in NYC
What’s the best recipe you’ve ever made? That’s a tough one, it changes with the seasons really, friends tell me I make some mean Sri Lankan inspired Curries and Broths, I would also say vegetable Juices and Smoothies (I’ve been focusing heavily on non fruit based juices lately) I recently finished my book which comes out Jan 2016 and had to recreate 150 of my recipes over 2 days!
Where do you get the inspiration from to create so many awesome recipes? Travelling and Markets. There is nothing better than buying fresh beautiful produce. I grab allot of inspiration from travelling in South America and Thailand. Everything has a great citrus and spice note running through it. I’m a chilli freak!
What are the ingredients you can’t live without? Coconut oil , apple cider vinegar , chilli, ginger, turmeric, almonds, lemon, avocado and kale
Where are your favourite places to eat? 365 Pollensa Mallorca – amazing food. Granger & Co in London and Hu Kitchen in NY
What do you do to stay active? I’m a massive fan of variation and functionality so I’m always onto something new and then I will recycle the old stuff back round. I have Boxed and done Muay Thai since I was 11 years old so that and running through the countryside are my cardio fixes. I’m into bodyweight stuff too, so push ups and pull-ups, I also love to do some good old fashioned Olympic Lifting for strength with a bar or kettlebells. As I’m always travelling though, I take my TRX and Liforme yoga mat with me everywhere, so I can do some yoga and bodyweight training.
What is your beauty routine? Coconut Oil as a moisturiser. In my book there is some homemade body scrubs made from the almond pulp you get from making nut milk
Where’s your favourite place in the world? Malibu or Corsica
What makes you happy? The ocean
Describe your perfect day? 3 breakfasts and a good boxing session followed by a hike with family and friends. We would end with a BBQ and Cold Pressed Juice Cocktails and music under the stars.
Do you have any favourite tips and tricks to stay healthy and happy everyday? Green Juice, sleep and exercise. When I get all three I feel like I can take on the world. I’m also a huge fan of a tonic I make every morning which consists of
– 1 tsp Apple Cider Vinegar
– half a lemon 1
– tsp raw honey
– a pinch of cinnamon
– a pinch of cayenne
– 400ml of warm water
