Welcome to Friday’s For The Love of Food, Summer Tomato’s weekly link roundup.
This week how carbs made us smarter, the secret to building confidence, and how to raise kids that eat healthy.
Too busy to read them all? Try this awesome free speed reading app I just discovered to read at 300+ wpm. So neat!

Links of the week
- For Evolving Brains, a ‘Paleo’ Diet of Carbs <<It’s so weird to me that everyone seems to want to use this research to tell paleo advocates that they are wrong, but paleo eating has always supported eating pre-agriculture starchy foods like potatoes and beets, it’s grains and legumes (agriculture crops) they avoid. Regardless, it’s worth keeping in mind that carbs aren’t the devil when they come from Real Food. (NY Times)
- Eco-Friendly Start-Up Sells Ugly Fruits and Veggies <<There’s been a lot of news about food waste lately, but not a lot of actionable advice on what to do about it. I love the idea of this startup to help deliver this perfectly edible produce to people who are happy to have it at a discount. (Discover)
- World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov on How to Build Confidence in the Face of Fear <<This isn’t about chess, it’s about the incredible power of human psychology to help you realize your dreams. (James Clear)
- Another Approach to Raising Healthy Eaters <<A friendly reminder to not push your own eating psychoses onto your children. (NY Times)
- More Thoughts on the Recent Low-fat vs. Low-carb Metabolic Ward Study <<I’ve seen this study reported in several news outlets, but this is the best analysis I found. (Whole Health Source)
- A Muscle Drug For Pigs Comes Out Of The Shadows <<Because you should know what is in your food. (NPR)
- Genetically Modified Foods, Herbicides and Human Safety <<The GMO issue is very complicated, but the overuse of herbicides and pesticides is one of the most disturbing consequences of the proliferation of GMO crops. It’s worth noting that more herbicides almost always results in more cancer, even if scientists have yet to pin down the mechanism. (Medline)
- How tomatoes went from ‘sour trash’ to worldwide domination <<I haven’t read much about the history of this site’s namesake. Really fascinating how recently tomatoes became a staple of so many types of cuisines. (Washington Post)
- How to Know Whether to Believe a Health Study <<People are always asking me this and my usual answer is “go get a Ph.D in biology.” This isn’t bad though for a super duper quick summary. (NY Times)
- Grilled Deviled Chicken <<This sounds strange, but looks so delicious! Turn down your speakers though, as there are some videos that randomly started playing when I went to this site. (David Lebovitz)
