Mr. Prevention started a few COVID-19 traditions. One of those is Little Caesars with the girls. They love that new tradition. It has currently replaced Taco Bell. Not that these are staples, but pizza is in rotation once a week. Those little chicks LOVE pizza. They are most definitely Mark’s children.
Another new tradition is movie night in – we watch a kids movie with the girls, put them to bed, and then watch a movie ourselves…usually of Mark’s choosing. As I am not a movie buff and have seen few movies, he has taken this time to familiarize me with some classics. The ones that come to mind most readily include Coming to America, Slapshot, and Mannequin.
If you’re sensing an 80’s theme going on, you are correct. Mark’s taste in movies mirrors that of his taste in music. I have told you guys that he loves Madonna, right? I mean…he LOVES Madonna. And, he is NOT ashamed.
Anyway, it’s a fun little COVID-life tradition that is new, inexpensive, and obviously, keeps us home and safe. It’s something to look forward to after work weeks and long days of parenting (I mean, I’m just being honest here!). We use the opportunity to turn on the projector in the basement, snuggle in with a ton of blankets, have the dog join in for snuggles, and we enjoy an adult beverage in the process. Not a bad little tradition at all as we wait for warmer temperatures to come and stay for awhile.
The other note-worthy tradition we’ve started is trading off weekend “agenda making” duties. I know, this is somewhat laughable but at a time where no one has plans, it helps us feel both a sense of normalcy, as well as productivity, to come up with some type of agenda. It includes little things: sidewalk chalk time, a walk or hike, sledding, yardwork, workouts, laundry, online church service, Houseparty calls or Facetime with friends or family, art or Pinterest projects, time with a book, movie night, making a particular recipe, baths for the girls…maybe even a bath for ourselves to relax. Nothing earth-shattering, but it seems to help us. A plaaaaaaaaaan.
Last weekend, it was my turn to make the weekend agenda. On it, I included donuts! Mark promptly reminded me that our favorite donut shop is closed and so I did what only everyone would assume of me: found a version to make at home with what we had on hand. These have a super simple ingredient list and I must say, were really, really good! The girls LOVED the colors and I employed them to help with sprinkle duty. Homemade donuts – always a good tradition, especially if baked vs. fried!
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- ⅔ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 4 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 2 eggs
- ⅔ cup + 3 Tbsp fat-free milk
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1½ cups powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 3-4 Tbsp fat-free milk
- Optional: food coloring and sprinkles
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Mist 2 donut pans with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In a small bowl, whisk together butter, eggs, milk, and vanilla extract. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
- Spoon the batter into the donut cavities, filling two-thirds full. Bake for 9-12 minutes or until golden. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 4-5 minutes before transferring to a wire cooling rack to cool completely.
- Meanwhile, mix together all glaze ingredients until smooth, adding food coloring, if desired. Working one at a time, dunk the tops of each donut into the glaze, gently shaking and rotating the donut to limit dripping as you return it to the cooling rack. Decorate with sprinkles, if desired. Best if served within 30 minutes. Leftovers may be stored in the fridge for 3 days.
Be well,
