Thursday Thoughts – Perfection

Welcome to Thursday Thoughts, my weekly column where I share what’s going on, what I’m loving, and other random things that cross my mind.

This past week has been a doozy! Not in a bad way but more in a, “Whoa, that was powerful,” way.

1) It was a week ago today that I heard the news about National Cheat Day. I hopped on social media to do a couple live videos to pick apart why this “strategy” is absolute rubbish, damaging, and indicative of some major healing that our society needs to do. I heard back from SO many people that they’re struggling with this endless cycle of “be good during the week and go YOLO on the weekend”…

…specifically that it’s not working for them. At all. And I wrote a blog post about it, too. Click here to read 5 Reasons to Ditch Cheat Days. It’s totally brought up a larger theme of perfection and the belief that you must be rigidly perfect with your diet to make progress. And that sets you up to ultimately fail – because let’s be real, life happens – which then sets you up for the guilt / shame cycle to begin again.

More specifically, I’m reminded about my own childhood perfectionistic tendencies (though I’m far less rigid and perfection-driven than I used to be) and how that was, on a deep level, motivated by fear. In fact, when I read Brene Brown’s Daring Greatly – which looks into the power of vulnerability – a lightbulb went on above my head. So much of what she writes about with regard to perfectionism resonated with me.

If you’re in the throes of a cheat day cycle you can’t break, I highly recommend her book as a starting point to start learning how vulnerability and trust – not tight control and perfection – are the way to a better relationship with food.

2) Switching gears entirely…I’ve been testing a new natural deodorant that, for me, is a total winner: Primally Pure’s new charcoal deodorant. We’ve used natural deodorant now for a couple years, and this new formulation from Primally Pure is way more gentle on my skin but still effective. (I have really sensitive skin.) Z has been using Fatco’s Stank Stop for years, and it works really well with his body.

Finding the right natural deodorant for you can take time, so if you’ve been on the hunt, don’t give up yet.

3) Tuesday I filmed 6 brand new cooking videos with my friends from the Inspo Network. It was organized chaos…a million tiny dishes of prepped food! What’s really exciting is that every month, I’ll have six videos coming out so you can watch and follow along.

4) I’ve had to switch up my reading list for a while because I’m starting the Nutritional Therapy Consultant program through the NTA in just two weeks! My primary goal is to refresh my content knowledge. (Hey, I graduated with a human physiology / biology 17 years ago and a lot’s changed!) I’m listening to The Big Fat Surprise on audiobook right now. Holy shit, y’all. This is the book I’ve been looking for for the last five years.

I studied science in college, learning how to read studies, interpret results, and look at data with a critical eye. So now, whenever a junk study or one that shows a weak correlation but not causation or one that’s funded by a group with a vested interest in positive results comes out…it’s easy for me to pick it apart. But not so much for you if you’ve never learned these skills.

Anyway, highly recommend it if you’re tired of people saying egg yolks will give you a heart attack.

5) The full moon this week was amazing! I’m feeling so much more connection to the moon lately, paying attention to the lunar cycle and phases…not to mention how it syncs up with my menstrual cycle. I can’t help but think how science (see above) is great but there are some things we still don’t understand…great mysteries…and that’s okay. Left my crystals out overnight for a recharge, too.

6) This week, I’ve been doing some really sweet FB Live videos about functional movement and how to move better, get stronger, and be pain-free. Join my closed group and check them out.

7) Susan David’s TED Talk about emotional courage had me like WHOA this week. Go watch.

That’s some of the randomness going through my brain this week.
