Name: Pip Black and Joan Murphy of Move Your Frame

Where do you live?

Pip: In a converted School House in Homerton. I sleep in the Head Master’s office.

Joan:  I live in an old pub in Bethnal Green which we’re currently renovating.

What sparked your interest in health and wellness?

Pip: I’ve grown up being active. I played sport from the age of well, 0 and charging about is what has always made me happy. I used to love team sports as you have such a tight crew working together to achieve something. I also like winning, so that was always good!

Joan: I grew up in New Zealand with health and wellness being very much a part of your lifestyle. I’ve always been involved in sport of some kind. From pole-vaulting to track cycling, triathlons to football, tonnes of yoga at uni and now buggy running with my son Zayden.

How did you build your passion for healthy living into a career?

Pip: I met Joan and we both realised that we believed in exactly the same things. We wanted health and fitness to be a big part of our lives (we were working in advertising at the time and were excelling in partying)! We wanted create more of a positive approach to exercise. There was a gap in the market and starting Frame was the perfect way to combine our passion with  what we were looking for career-wise; being our own bosses and making sure every day is different.

Joan: After travelling in Europe and settling in London I soon realised there was something missing. I wasn’t captivated by what was on offer and wanted an exercise option that was fun. Then I met Pip and we decided to make a change. 7 years later, here we are!

Who inspires you?

Pip: So many different people I come into contact with daily. Having Joan by my side to celebrate hard work and to work through challenges which keeps me inspired. Having my son Phin really starts to put into perspective just how much my parents gave up for me. None of this would be possible without them.

Joan: I have to say my family. My husband Alex and son Zayden never cease to amaze me.  My parents have owned their own business for 37 years and my 4 brothers and sisters all own their own companies. I grew up in an entrepreneurial family so it felt like a natural progression. Hearing from Framers about how much of a positive impact Frame has on their day to day or how it’s changed their attitude to exercise is a constant source of inspiration. We love receiving feedback from the community on which classes they like, as well as recommendations and ideas.

Favourite quote?

Pip: I’m loving the quote we have on the feature wall at Frame Shoreditch at the moment (as is everyone else from the number of times it’s posted on Instagram)! It reads: ‘Be bad until you’re good and good until you’re great’. Basically don’t stress if you’re not where you want to be from the moment you set out to do something. Keep working on it, and you’ll get there eventually.

Joan: ‘Live for the journey not the destination.’ Pip and I have so much fun creating new concepts and classes and thinking of ways to constantly evolve. Working together makes the journey the BEST thing about our jobs and it’s so great to be able to share that.

What is your biggest achievement so far?

Pip: Working out how to juggle a full-on schedule whilst looking after my little boy AND working out.

Joan: Creating a business that helps so many other people is a pretty great one. And owning a business and having a family (at the same time), like Pip said and LOVING every minute of it!

Have you always been into fitness or was it something you learnt to enjoy in recent years?

Pip: Since forever. I was the weird person cycling to work back in 2006 when there were no other bikes at the traffic lights!

Joan: It was in my blood, (or in the New Zealand water) so I’d have to say always!

What’s a typical daily workout for you?

Pip: I recently bought a running buggy so I can run Phin into nursery. I make time for 3 classes a week which is usually a combination of classes that are on when I can find a spare hour in my day. I like to mix it up and love getting my body moving and clearing my head. Sometimes I’ll look for something high intensity and super sweaty like Box Fit or BODY by Frame, and other times a yoga class is what my body needs. But really just give me good music and an enthusiastic instructor and I am a happy lady. I definitely put less pressure on myself to exercise daily now that I have Phin, and my body is loving me for it!

Joan: There is no typical day but I make sure that every week I fit in in a yoga class like Vinyasa Flow or pilates, weight training, cardio and something just for fun. We know that like us, Framers lead busy lives so our timetable is based on that.  When you’ve got a spare moment you can drop into a class and know that there will be a variety of different classes available at that time.  I actually teach two classes back to back on a Sunday so that’s a workout in itself! I always make time for family exercise whether it be swimming with Zayden on a Saturday or a mid week family jog to catch up and all spend some quality time together.

Where do you get the inspiration from to develop so many unique forms of exercise routines?

Pip: All of our classes are tried and tested by us. Each class is created with fun at the forefront! We want to have fun exercising so all of our classes incorporate moves and sequences we know others will love as well.

Joan: I’ve spent a lifetime doing exercise and I’m always trying new things and finding new ways to exercise. One of my favourite things is to ‘jam’ with the other instructors – the best things come out of playing.

What’s the one piece of equipment you can’t live without?

Pip: A kettlebell. I have one at home. A guaranteed cardio = strength workout in less than 20 minutes!

Joan: It depends on what I’m working on at the time. At the moment I’m obsessed with gliders but my absolute favourite piece of equipment is a resistance band. I always have at least 2 n my handbag (not kidding) so I can exercise on the go.

What are your favourite ways to stay active?

Pip: Running, dancing or yoga-ing. I don’t have a favourite, I love it all. As long as it’s always to music and always with friends.

Joan: I’ve got a baby seat on the back of my bike. It’s great to drop Zayden off at nursery and then cycle between meetings. I love a bit of incidental exercise.

What’s your typical…

Breakfast:

Pip: Eggs full stop. Poached, scrambled or an omlette.

Joan: I’d like to say Shakshuka but the reality is a smoothie so I can drink it on the go.

Lunch:

Pip: A grainy and veg-based salad or eggs (if I didn’t have them for breakfast)!

Joan: If I’ve been organised you can’t beat some home cooked veggies and meat from the night before. If not, a salad box with protein is my go-to.

Snack:

Pip: Almond butter + coffee (is coffee a snack?)

Joan: I grab a few things from the veggie drawer or fruit bowl as well as some leftover smoothie from the morning

Dinner:

Pip: I’m not really a routine person. Every day is different. Ranges from fish and steamed veg, to a big, juicy steak.

Joan: During the week I’m a meat, veg and grain girl. On the weekend, that goes out the window!

a

What’s your favourite dessert?

Pip: Cheese please

Joan: I love 80% dark chocolate

Where are your favourite places to eat?

Pip: Albion for eggs, Moro for a date, Allpress Dalston for coffee.

Joan: Tiosk on Broadway Market for some creative, healthy, delicious food, Raw Duck in Hackney for delicious pickled and fermented dishes & organic wine, Caravan Kings Cross because I love everything on the menu, Pavilion in Victoria Park for brunch after family runs.

What is your beauty routine?

Pip: My go-to is an Environ eye cream, it works magic. I love Apple Cider Vinegar as an inexpensive, natural and anti bacterial cleanser when diluted with water. I love Pfeffer Su for amazing facials.

Joan: Daily, I use  Pai Camomile and Rose Gentle Hydrating Cleanser, Sans[ceuticals] Activator 7 body, hair and face oil, Trilogy mist toner.

Where’s your favourite place in the world?

Pip: The older I get, the more I appreciate returning to my childhood home. Regardless of what kind of week you’ve had, you always feel safe and looked after. Plus the fridge is always full!

Joan: Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. This is where I holidayed all through my childhood. It’s the epitome of relaxation and family life.

What makes you happy?

Pip: My family, a lie in, a bottle of really good red wine and the rush of endorphins you get from an awesome workout.

Joan: I generally move at 100mph and get excited by lots of things!

Describe your perfect day:

Pip:  A lie in, a long run, a swim in the sea, lots of sunshine and a long, boozy lunch.

Joan: Weekend mornings swimming and running with my husband Alex and son Zayden followed by brunch (fingers crossed when Zayden’s having a nap) followed by a long, relaxed dinner.

Do you have any favourite tips and tricks to stay healthy and happy everyday?

Pip: Just move. If you don’t have time to do a class or go for a run, then do some stretching before bed or do some squats with your baby, or just walk around rather than catching the bus or tube. Eat well, stick to one glass of wine except on special occasions and surround yourself with happy, positive people.

Joan: For us, leading healthy, happy and full lives is about having fun along the way and not taking anything too seriously. Our approach to staying happy and healthy is carried through from our approach to exercise and staying active. It doesn’t need to be a chore. Have fun doing it and enjoy the journey!
