This week the real reason diets don’t work, the best exercise for aging, and a new clue to binge eating.
Too busy to read them all? Try this awesome free speed reading app to read at 300+ wpm. So neat!
I also share links on Twitter @summertomato and the Summer Tomato Facebook page. I’m very active on all these sites and would love to connect with you.
Links of the week
- The Weight Loss Trap: Why Your Diet Isn’t Working – It’s so refreshing to read a sensible and nuanced take on long-term healthy (and possible!) weight loss. (Warning: obnoxious autoplay video, turn down your volume before clicking) (TIME)
- Electric Brain Stimulation Offers Binge-Eating Clue – Neuroscience has uncovered a new mechanism linked to at least one form of binge eating. The fact that we’re just now learning things like this shows how little science still knows about what’s going on with weight regulation in humans, so figuring out what works for you is still up to you. (Scientific American)
- A science-backed trick to reduce fear and anxiety takes just 30 seconds and a pen – This works and is something I also learned in during my silent mindful meditation retreat a few years ago. Simply putting a name to your emotions can be hugely powerful in defusing their power, putting you back in control of how you react to them. (Quartz)
- The Best Exercise for Aging Muscles – What would you guess? (NY Times)
- Traffic-related air pollution linked to DNA damage in children – Kids appear to be more sensitive to certain environmental exposures than adults are. This is disturbing. (ScienceDaily)
- Fittbo – An Innovative Lunchbox – How cool does this lunchbox look?! Looks like the Foodist Plate is built right in. If I still went to an office every day I would be all over this. (Kickstarter)
- Common sweetener in low-cal foods also a marker for weight gain – While this does not prove cause and effect, the fact that the sugar substitute was in their blood before the weight gain is interesting. Even more interesting is that they weren’t even looking for this specific connection. The follow up work here is worth keeping an eye on. (ScienceDaily)
- Fitness trackers accurately measure heart rate but not calories burned, study finds – Last week I pointed out that calorie tracking is an exercise in futility, but I am still a believer in activity trackers as they are pretty accurate at measuring steps (aka sedentary behavior) and heart rate. (ScienceDaily)
- No Coke and Pepsi, Adding Fibre and Pro-Biotics Doesn’t Make Liquid Candy Healthy – Good lord. I trust that all of you reading this know better than to fall for such ridiculous marketing hype. (Weighty Matters)
- RED POTATO SALAD WITH CREAMY CASHEW DIJON DRESSING & DILL – I think it is officially potato salad season. Yum. (The Full Helping)
