Welcome to Friday’s For The Love of Food, Summer Tomato’s weekly link roundup.
This week calories tell you nothing, Monsanto sues California, and how to stay motivated.
Too busy to read them all? Try this awesome free speed reading app I just discovered to read at 300+ wpm. So neat!

Links of the week
- Rethinking the Calorie <<Remember when I told you that counting calories is a practice of deceiving yourself? Here it’s explained again in excruciating detail. (The Atlantic)
- Kale craze raises heavy metal concerns <<Thank you Monica for always reminding us to not be insane. (Nutrition Over Easy)
- The Right Way to Stretch Before Exercise <<A few years ago The Times told us we were doing our pre-workout stretching all wrong and that we should stop the ridiculousness immediately. This week they backed off that stance quite a bit, which I appreciate since I never stopped. (NY Times)
- 6 Reasons To Hit The Gym That Have Nothing To Do With Losing Weight <<Because if losing weight is the main reason you’re going, I’d be willing to bet you won’t be doing it a year from now. Exercise feels great when you approach it right. (Huffington Post)
- Monsanto Sues California Over Herbicide Classification <<Industrial food giant Monsanto’s biggest product has been classified as a probable human carcinogen by the WHO, and so California wants to put a warning label on it. Monsanto does not like this attack on their $4.8B/year product, so has sued the state. Remember this next time they try to tell you that they make GMOs because they want to cure the world of hunger. (NY Times)
- The Health Benefits of Knitting <<Meditation not your jam? Pick up knitting or another hobby that requires prolonged focus. (NY Times)
- Why Chicken Broth Packs a Bigger Flavor Punch than Beef Broth <<This really surprised me (but I still think beans taste better cooked in beef broth). (Lifehacker)
- How language can affect the way we think <<It’s natural to believe that all of the ideas, thoughts and feelings you have about something (e.g. exercise, vegetables, dieting) are generated by your own genius, but it’s really not true. Your ideas are shaped by the words you use and the environment you develop in, which has a profound impact on what you believe and therefore how you act. So. Damn. Interesting. (TED)
- How To Stick To Your Goals Through The Power Of Friendship <<Interesting and practical take on motivation. Very cool. (Huffington Post)
- IS COLLOIDAL SILVER HARMFUL TO YOUR HEALTH? <<I’ve actually had someone ask me about this recently, so for clarity’s sake the answer is yes, stay away from the stuff. (Dr. Weil)
- leek, ham and cheese egg bake <<Great brunch idea. Yum. (smitten kitchen)
