Healthy Holiday Tips

a

Going on holiday is the most exciting thing but if you’re really into healthy eating or eat a certain way to manage a health condition than it can be a little worrying too. I’m sure I’m not the only one who worries about whether I’ll be able to find green juice or delicious healthy food when they’re away, or that I’ll come home feeling less well than I did when I left. It’s such a shame for those worries to take away from your enjoyment of something special though so I wanted to share my top tips for a healthy holiday with you so that you can be prepared and love every minute of your trip!

Be Over Prepared

Always assume that you won’t be able to get what you want and pack anything and everything you could need. When I go away I normally stay with friends and family in a house or Air B&B, rather than a hotel, so I take literally everything – rye bread, brown rice pasta, quinoa, almond butter, tahini and oats. Basically my whole suitcase is food! This way I know that if I can’t find anything else to eat I always have proper food so I won’t go hungry and get grumpy as a result of low blood sugar. I normally make a small meal before going out so that if the language barrier means the restaurant doesn’t understand my requirements then I won’t be sitting there with a rumbling stomach! If you are staying at a hotel then call them before you go and explain your requirements, so that you know what the set up is before you arrive.

Pack Snacks

I talked about this a little in my post about eating well on the plane, but make sure you have plenty of snacks so that you have something to enjoy everyday. Either make snacks like granola bars, oat cookies and energy bites or buy snacks bars that you love, and add them to the pile of food to go in your suitcase! Make sure you carry them around with you so that you can nibble on them while you explore your destination. I know it makes me really happy to enjoy a few energy bites while everyone else tucks into ice cream, otherwise I just get a bit jealous that they get something sweet and I don’t!

Do Some Research

Check out your destination online before you go – have a look for good supermarkets, health food shops, juice bars, healthy restaurants and anything else you might need! It’s good to have a list of places you want to try so that you know where you can find the things you need. It may also mean that you have to pack fewer food items in your suitcase! I often use the site Happy Cow, they list lots of healthy places and are usually pretty reliable. You can also email hotels and ask a concierge there to give you some local recommendations, or try using social media to ask around.

Get Translating

Have a look at what gluten free, dairy free, I’m allergic to etc means in the language of your destination so that you can clearly explain your requirements to a restaurant. This way you don’t have to worry that they’ll give you something that will make you feel unwell.

Hopefully this way you won’t have to worry while you’re away and you’ll absolutely love every second of your trip! :)
